The mission of the National Poisons Information Centre at All India Institute of Medical Sciences is to serve as a national resource for poison information, toxicological guidance, education, and research aimed at reducing the burden of poisoning and chemical exposures in India. Established in 1995 under the Department of Pharmacology, the Centre functions as a round-the-clock emergency advisory service for healthcare professionals, public health agencies, and the general public.
A key objective of the Centre is to provide rapid, evidence-based information on the diagnosis, management, prevention, and treatment of poisoning cases involving drugs, chemicals, pesticides, household agents, industrial toxins, environmental contaminants, venomous bites, and occupational exposures. Through its 24×7 poison helpline services, NPIC supports clinicians in making timely therapeutic decisions, thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing poisoning-related morbidity and mortality.
The Centre is also committed to strengthening poison prevention and chemical safety awareness in the community. Through educational campaigns such as “Be Cautious, Be Poison Safe,” NPIC promotes safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances while educating children, parents, workers, and healthcare providers about poison prevention strategies and first-aid measures.
In addition, NPIC aims to advance the field of clinical and analytical toxicology through research, training, capacity building, and development of poison information databases relevant to Indian poisoning patterns. The Centre actively contributes to teaching, professional training, toxicovigilance, and policy support for poison control and public health preparedness. By integrating patient care, research, education, and outreach, NPIC continues to play a pivotal role in safeguarding the nation against toxicological emergencies and promoting safer use of chemicals and medicines.
