Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyan : Transforming Healthcare with Ayurveda

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi joins the ‘Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyan’ to help employees and patients understand their unique Prakriti and adopt personalized preventive health practices.

The Centre for Integrative Medicine and Research (CIMR) at AIIMS, New Delhi, initiated the Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyan (DKPP), a visionary campaign launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on October 29, 2024. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Ayush, aims to identify individuals' unique mind-body constitutions, known as Prakriti and provide customized health recommendations, encompassing diet, sleep, and exercise, for health promotion and disease prevention.

This campaign at CIMR, AIIMS, New Delhi was inaugurated by Dr. M. Srinivas, Director, who became the lead participant in the Prakriti assessment drive. A total of 4,500 plus Prakriti assessments were accomplished. The campaign’s success is attributed to guidance and leadership of Dr. Gautam Sharma, Professor, Dept. of Cardiology, Founder and Professor In-charge of CIMR, AIIMS, New Delhi.

CIMR Ayurveda physicians have conducted the Prakriti assessments of AIIMS patients, staff and citizens of Delhi-NCR in association with CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) and the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi. Participants were educated on the significance of Prakriti in personalized healthcare, highlighting its role in disease prevention and holistic well-being.

AIIMS has been integrating Prakriti-based research into clinical practices for over five years. Studies conducted include assessments of post-CABG patients, multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica cases, and bronchial asthma patients.

The Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyan demonstrates India’s innovative approach to healthcare by integrating Ayurveda with digital technology acting as a cornerstone to a global research in near future by generating valuable scientific data.

  1. The CIMR will only support investigator initiated proposals.
  2. The CIMR will support studies with a core research theme based on Yoga or Ayurveda.
  3. The CIMR is not a funding agency but only a facility to help carry out the research work. Funding responsibility rests with the principal investigator of the study, who may apply to various agencies. The funding is expected to be sought once the project is accepted by the CIMR research committee.
  4. The CIMR is a restricted area accessible to only CIMR committee members, project investigators, research staff, yoga experts on the panel, other staff employed at CIMR, and the recruited subjects under study projects. The facility is not meant for cultural or leisure activities.
  5. All proposals will have to be approved by the institutional ethics committee of AIIMS, New Delhi.
  6. All proposals will be screened by the Professor In-charge prior to submitting to the research committee for looking into its quality, methodology feasibility, safety and implication to health practice. The current research committee members are Professor Nikhil Tandon, Professor Shiv Kumar Chaudhary, Professor Rohit Bhatia, Dr. Maneesh Singhal and Professor Gautam Sharma, who will coordinate the research activity. The research Committee may invite another specialist depending upon the study focus, if so required.
  7. The CIMR committee reserves its decision on whether the proposal can be carried out at CIMR, and the decision will be final. The CIMR, however, does not stop the investigator from carrying out his research work elsewhere.
  8. The CIMR will not allow any research on sick patients, non-ambulatory patients or patients who require close monitoring for any untoward side effects at the centre. All such studies should be carried out in place with appropriate facilities in the institute. The safety of the patients will be the responsibility of the principal investigator of the project.
  9. Any study which risks damage to the CIMR infrastructure or its equipment will be strictly prohibited.
  10. The CIMR will look into the feasibility of the number of studies that can be carried out at one time at CIMR, depending upon important factors like the number of subjects, staff availability and duration of the study period for which the subjects need to be visiting CIMR etc. The committee will decide on the number of studies that can be practically carried out at one time at CIMR. The permission to start a study will thus be given accordingly.
  11. The trial manpower can also be used to assist in functioning of the CIMR as and when required.
  12. Authorship of publications will be mutually decided by the principal investigator and the Professor In-charge, CIMR before the commencement of the trial. All trials conducted at the CIMR will acknowledge CIMR in the publications. Research nurses and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) staff will be considered for authorship depending on their role.
