Training

 

One of the primary mandates of the centre is to build capacities of human resources in the country in the area of substance use disorders. The centre has been involved in providing training to doctors and other categories of staff members since 1989. The centre has developed curricula, training schedules, modalities and resource materials for training of trainers, Medical Doctors (GDMOs), nurses and laboratory personnel. The training programmes have been reviewed and modified through workshops of resource persons. Some of the training programmes organised by the centre in the recent past include:

Training:

  • Training of General Duty Medical Officers held from 28th March 2011 at NDDTC, AIIMS, funded by NFCDA, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.  
  • Training of students from Nepal, Mizoram and Punjab. 
  • One day orientation for Nursing students from Denmark, July 20, 2010. 
  • In-house training of Nurses on Comorbidity in Substance Abuse. December 9, 2010. 
  • Annual Day Symposium on “Linkages Between Government, NGO And Private Sector For Management Of Substance Use Disorders” held on 13th April 2011 at NDDTC, AIIMS.
  • One day Refresher Training on Opioid Substitution Treatment 11th Nov. 2011 at  Tihar Prisons 
  • Training workshop on “Methadone Maintenance Treatment in India” organised by NDDTC, AIIMS, New Delhi in collaboration with UNODC ROSA , NDDTC, AIIMS, New Delhi , 31st Oct 2011 to 4 Nov 2011.
  • ‘Training  for Trainers’ Programme  of General Duty Medical Officers held from 28th March 2011-8th April, 2011, 12-24th Sept. 2011, 13th Feb.-25th Feb. 2012 at NDDTC, AIIMS, funded by NFCDA, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance. 
  • Training for Trainers’ Programme  of General Duty Medical Officers  funded by  NFCDA and organized by NDDTC, AIIMS at Chandigarh (August  17th-19th, 2011), Imphal (Nov. 21st, 2011), Ranchi (Dec. 5th-6th, 2011; Feb. 12th- 13th, 2012), Mumbai (Dec.1st-2nd, Feb. 22nd-23rd).  
  • Training Programme for “Intervention for Street Children” for staff from NGOs on 29th April to 5th May 2011 at NDDTC, AIIMS.  
  • Workshop on Practical approaches to the effective treatment of drug addiction in Asia in collaboration with Adelaide University in Hotel Claridges on 17th-19th October 2011.  
  • Meetings for networking between GO, NGO and private de-addiction services conducted at NDDTC, Delhi on 12th August 2011, NIMHANS on 19th August 2011, KEM Mumbai 26th August 2011, RIMS, Imphal 13th Sep. 2011.  
  • Training Course for Medical professionals, Bhutan from 23.7.12 to 4.8.12, funded by Ministry of Finance, GOI.  
  • Training Course for Medical professionals, Bangladesh   from 24th September – 6th October, 2012 funded by Ministry of External Affairs, GOI.  
  • Training programme at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in October, 2012 under the activity “National Capacity Building of Medical Professionals on Treatment of Substance Use Disorders.” Funded by National Fund for control of Drug Abuse (NFCDA), Ministry of Finance, GOI.  
  • Review and refresher training workshop for “Methadone Maintenance Treatment in India: A Multi-site Feasibility and Effectiveness Study” held on 19th-21st November, 2012, organized by NDDTC at Hotel Conclave Boutique, New Delhi.  
  • Two  Day Training of Research Investigators at four sites - Aizawal- 1st -2nd May 2012,  Pune - November 26th to 27th, 2012, Kerala - 13th & 14th December, 2012, Two trainings  in  April and December, 2012, Delhi, under the project entitled  “ An assessment of pattern, profile and correlates of    drug use among adolescents   in India”.  Funded by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).  
  • Under the (GFATM) project,twenty-six Training courses for medical doctors and nurses, Programme Managers, Counsellors, Data managers, NGO staff were organized by NDDTC  as Nodal RTTC, to support capacity building of medical staff as well as those providing Opioid Substitution Treatment (OST) of various States of the country.
  • Training course was conducted for Health professionals of Indian Oil Corporation, Digboi, Assam-20th& 21st Jan. 2015, under the project  “A workplace intervention to address Alcohol and Drug use at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, AOD, Digboi, Assam”.
  • Four ‘Training for Trainers’ Programme of General Duty Medical Officers held from 16th September 2013-28th September, 2013, and 17th February-1st March, 2014 at NDDTC, AIIMS, funded by NFCDA, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.
  • The center organised a National CME on Opioid Substitution Therapy on 18-19 April 2015 on eve of its Annual day celebrations 

Note: The resource persons for all these training programmes include the faculty and staff members of NDDTC. Faculty members from other institutes are also sometimes invited as resource persons for the training. 

The centre has completed project focused on training of doctors in the area of substance use disorders. The project envisaged imparting training to at least one doctor in each of the district hospital in the country, so that close to 350 doctors of country received training over a period of three years. This project was funded by the National Fund for Control of Drug Abuse (NFCDA), Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. Other institutes collaborating with NDDTC, AIIMS in this venture included:

  • Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP), Ranchi
  • Government Medical College (GMC), Chandigarh
  • KEM Hospital, Mumbai
  • National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru
  • Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal

Besides these, the faculty from the centre has also been involved in providing training to doctors, nurses, project managers and counsellors from various other organisations. These include the NGOs supported by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, National Institute of Social Defence, Regional Resource and Training Centres, National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Sciences, National AIDS Control Organisation, State AIDS Control Societies etc.

The centre has also produced resource material in the form of manuals for training. These manuals are distributed to the participants during training programmes. In addition these manuals are also available for free download.

The centre has been involved in providing training to doctors and other categories of staff members since 1989. The centre has developed curricula, training schedules, modalities and resource materials for training of trainers, Medical Doctors (GDMOs), nurses and laboratory personnel. Between January 1989 and October 2007, about 40 courses for doctors have been organised. Various manuals are available.
