Sensitization Workshop on Management of Dead Bodies in Disaster Situations

Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi organized a workshop on 09th October 2023 in Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in Virtual Autopsy as a with International committee of Red Cross (ICRC), India to sensitize the need for enhancing forensic human identification capacity in mass fatality incidents for forensic practitioners dealing with Management of Dead for better understanding of their role and responsibilities. The workshop was attended by delegates from different Medical colleges and Hospitals of Delhi

The principal course resource faculty were:

WORKSHOP ON FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY BASICS AND VIRTUAL AUTOPSY

12-13 June 2023

 

Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi organized a workshop on 12th and 13th June 2023 in Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in Virtual Autopsy as a joint venture of AIIMS & International committee of Red Cross (ICRC), India on Virtual Autopsy and Forensic Anthropology. This workshop included lectures and practical exercises over two days on the topics related to Virtual Autopsy, basic elements of establishing a biological profile (sex, age, ancestry, stature) from the skeleton and assessing hard tissue injuries and other characteristics that might contribute to a positive identification. The principal course resource faculty were:

  1. Dr Sudhir Kumar Gupta, Professor & Head, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, AIIMS, New Delhi & Principal Investigator of Centre of Advanced Research and excellence in Virtual Autopsy.

  2. Dr Derek Congram, PhD, a forensic specialist for the International Committee of the Red Cross Regional Delegation for India, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives and a board-certified forensic anthropologist with 23 years of experience in more than 20 countries.

  3. Dr Abhishek Yadav, Additional Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, AIIMS, New Delhi & Co-Investigator of Centre of Advanced Research and excellence in Virtual Autopsy.

  4. Dr Abilash S, Assistant Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, AIIMS, New Delhi.

  5. Dr Karthi R Vighnesh, Senior Medical officer, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, AIIMS, New Delhi

The workshop was attended by delegates from all over India including JIPMER, PGI Chandigarh, AIIMS Bhopal, IIT Gandhi Nagar, AIIMS Rishikesh, RMl Lucknow as well as international delegates from Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives.

The event was coordinated by Dr Abhishek Yadav (Addl Prof), Dr Kulbhushan Prasad (Addl Prof), Dr Abilash S (Asst Prof) and Dr Swati Tyagi (Asst Prof).

DAY 1  

  1. INAUGURATION

The inaugural ceremony began with formal procedure of lamp lighting to seek the blessings of godess Saraswati. The lamp was lighted by the chief guest Dr. BB Choudhary (DCP, Delhi Police) along with Dr. Sudhir K Gupta in the presence of Dr. Binay K Bastia and Dr. D N Bhardwaj. The Chief Guest then delivered a brief lecture highlighting the importance of training of Police and other non-medical staff, in medicolegal work as well as emphasized regarding good communication and interaction by the doctors.

  1. KEYNOTE SESSION

The  session was delivered by Prof & Head, Dr. Sudhir K Gupta, , Forensic Medicine & Toxicology Department, AIIMS New Delhi, who gave a deep insight into the topic, “2nd or 3rd opinion in cases of cbi & referred from court”.  

He discussed the highlights of the cases encountered by him and highlighted the need for evaluating the circumstantial evidences in every case and also gave a holistic definition for Forensic Medicine. The delegates were given the opportunity to have hands on the actual case files of the CBI cases and discuss the same with the Board members of the cases. Each case was discussed with photographs along with explanations and basis for giving a particular opinion.

INAUGURATION OF CENTRE FOR ADVANCED RESEARCH AND EXCELLENCE IN VIRTUAL AUTOPSY

Centre for advanced Research and Excellence in Virtual Autopsy has been established as a joint collaboration  

The inaugural function began with national anthem followed by the welcoming of the chief guest by Dr. Sudhir Kumar Gupta, Prof & Head Dept. of Forensic Medicine AIIMS, New Delhi, followed by Lamp lighting ceremony commenced.  

Formal inauguration of the first of its kind, the “Centre for advanced research and excellence in Virtual Autopsy Centre “was done by unveiling a plaque to mark the inauguration by Dr. Balram Bhargava and Dr. Sudhir Kumar Gupta. The event was graced by the presence of faculties of different AIIMS of the country who were taking part in the historic 2nd Annual AIIMS Forensic Guild Conclave, 2021. This was followed by traditional ribbon cutting and inauguration of the CT Scan complex. Dr. Balram Bhargava gave an inspiring and thought-provoking talk by emphasizing the need for innovations in forensic medicine as well as good working environment with all facilities. He presented the importance of death and also quoted the lines from the song, “Gambler” by Kenny Rogers where the gambler gives important tips for life to a young man. He also mentioned about death in sleep as the best death which was explained by the Chief Guest with opinions taken from the delegates, regarding the same.

Dr Balram Bhargava was then given a tour of the Centre for Advanced research and Excellence in Virtual Autopsy and adjoining renovated odouless Autopsy Mortuary Suite

Prof. Adarsh a Gold medallist is currently Professor, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology and also In-charge Forensic Anthropology & Forensic Radiology, AIIMS, New Delhi. He is lone member from India in International Academy of Legal Medicine, British Association in Forensic Medicine, The International Association of Forensic Toxicology and Canadian Society of Forensic Sciences besides being life member of many scientific associations from India and abroad. He was awarded Honorary Diploma in Legal Medicine by International Academy of Legal Medicine at Portugal in 2009. He is the first person in world to receive Commonwealth Fellowship at UK twice in year 2011 (Forensic & Legal Medicine) and 2015 (Forensic Anthropology). He is also a Fellow of Royal Society of Medicine, London, Indian Association of Medicolegal Experts (2014), International Science Congress Association (2015), Indian Society of Toxicology (2016) & Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine (2020). He is honorary medicolegal Expert to National Human Rights Commission and Central Bureau of Investigation-topmost agency of criminal investigation in India since more than a decade where he has handled around one thousand complicated and high profile cases of death like Sushant Singh Rajput, Sunanda Pushkar, Sheena Bora,    Badayun two sisters death, Batla House encounter, Tamilnadu custodial deaths, Telangana encounter case, Unnao gangrape and murder, Gopinath munde , Rohit Shekhar Tiwari, Bhandara three sisters deaths & Nithari serial killings to name a few.

Prof. Adarsh is Visiting Faculty to Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK, National Piragov University, Vinnitsya Ukraine, National Police Academy, Hyderabad, CBI Academy Ghaziabad, National Institute of Criminology & Forensic Sciences, New Delhi & Central Detective Training School, Chandigarh. He has more than 22 years of teaching experience and medicolegal field work. Has guided 20 PhD/postgraduate students and conducted around 5000 autopsies. His PhD students have been from field of forensic toxicology and forensic anthropology who have done their MSc in Forensic Sciences from various universities. Has been examiner and subject expert in Forensic Medicine & Toxicology in various universities of 15 states of India as well as Nepal, Mauritius & New Zealand. Delivered 2 orations & about 100 lectures in various scientific conferences all over the world, published 75 papers, written 5 chapters in various textbooks of forensic medicine, acted as Editorial board member and peer reviewer in 20 journals of speciality from India and abroad including Romanian Journal of Legal Medicine, Egyptian Journal of Forensic Sciences, HSOA Journal of Forensic, Legal and Investigative Sciences USA, Adli Tip Bulletin Turkey, Journal of Forensic & Legal Medicine, UK, Biomedical and Biosocial Anthropology Ukraine etc. Currently also Editor of Indian Journal of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology.

Representing the country at highest level as Governing Council Member of 3 International scientific organisations viz. International Academy of Legal Medicine (IALM), Indo-pacific Association of Law Medicine & Sciences (INPALMS) & Asia Pacific Association of Medicolegal Agencies (APMLA). Earlier was General Secretary of Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine for 3 years (2010-13). Developed online courses (MOOCs) in three subjects ie Forensic Medicine, Forensic Anthropology & Forensic Serology & Biology under Digital India Mission for Ministry of Human Resource and Development which are now freely available on YouTube for learning by police personnel, forensic science and medical students all over world .

He was honoured with Commendation Certificate for his exemplary work in field of Forensic Investigations & Human Rights by National Human Rights Commission in 2014. He was awarded with Education Award for Excellence by Indo-US Global Foundation in 2016. Honoured with International Cooperation Medal by Government of Ukraine in 2020.
