Introduction
The department of Hematology is a composite department that provides both Clinical Hematology and Hematopathology services to the Institute.
Clinical Hematology service provides comprehensive management for patients with benign and malignant hematological illnesses. The department runs specialized outpatient clinics for patients with these illnesses. The department has been performing autologous and allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HCT), including haploidentical donor HCT, for various benign and hematological illnesses like aplastic anemia, thalassemia, myeloma, lymphomas, leukemias, and myelodysplastic syndromes.At day-care, short admissions to hematology patients are providedfor bone marrow procedures, intrathecal chemotherapy, phlebotomies and blood component transfusions.
Hematopathology section provides state-of-the-art evaluation of blood and bone marrow diseases. Expert hematopathology services offered by the department include bone marrow examination including immunohistochemistry and cytochemistry; flowcytometric immunophenotyping; molecular diagnosticsincluding prenatal diagnosis for thalassemia and hemophilia, hemophilia carrier screening and myriads of hematological cancer diagnostic and residual disease evaluation by molecular methods;specialized hemolytic and coagulation tests.
The department offers two DM programs (1. Clinical Hematology 2, Hematopathology) and PhD program in hematology. We have a robust DM teaching program managed by experienced and renowned faculty. Apart from regular clinical and lab teaching, we regularly have interactive specialty lectures from faculty from abroad. The department was the first to introduce DM program in hematopathology in the country. We take pride in our more than 150 alumni of clinical hematology, hematopathology and PhD program, who have been torch bearers in hematology in India as well as abroad. The department has also been offering observer ship, and short-term training in various aspects.
The department conducts research of the highest standard with the aim of benefiting both the patients and advancement in medicine.Our faculty have contributed immensely to the field of hematology through their passion for research through collaborative projects and publications. The department’s ongoing work focusses on chronic myeloid leukemia, aplastic anemia, PNH, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, myelodysplastic syndrome and acute leukemia.
Department of Hematology is conducting ISHTM-AIIMS external quality assessment program for hemogram since 2003. Proficiency testing provider (PTP), the goal of the ISHTM-AIIMS- EQAP is to carry out accurate and timely proficiency testing for hemogram for laboratories throughout India. Presently more than 7500 laboratories are registered in the program with increasing number of applications being received continuously. This program has recently been accredited as proficiency testing provider (PTP) by NABL (Certificate No. PC-1098), as per the ISO/IEC 17043:2023 standard.
The department is involved in community services for haemophilia and hemoglobinopathies. Recently, the department is also involved in community health care on tribal health including sickle cell disease.
