Excellence in patient care, research, and education is the overall goal of the Department of Orthopaedics at AIIMS.The Department of Orthopaedics Surgery provides a comprehensive and integrated Orthopaedics program for patients, students, residents, and fellows. In addition to general Orthopaedics, the department has a faculty which specializes in the field of joint replacement, sports medicine ,hand surgery, musculoskeletal oncology, pediatric Orthopaedics ,spine surgery and treatment of complex trauma. The recent innovations in Orthopaedic surgery such as minimally invasive joint replacement, surface replacement arthroplasty, revision hip and knee replacements, minimally invasive spine surgery , vascular grafting for non unions, limb re-implantations, arthroscopic PCL and shoulder surgery are all being practiced with excellent results. There is also a bone bank facility in the department where both live donor bone and cadaveric bone are preserved and used as and when required.ICMR and CSIR funded research projects in the field of Orthopaedics are also being carried out.The Institute also has modern Physiotherapy Unit which works is close co-ordination with the Orthopaedic Department for comprehensive care of patients. |
Department Scope and Functions
(A) Academics:
- Post-graduate residency program of MS (Ortho) for three years.
- Senior residency after MS (ortho) for three years.
- Fellowship in arthroscopy
- Fellowship in tumour surgery
- Fellowship in arthroplasty
- Fellowship in pelvic and acetabular surgery
(B) Research:
The department witnessed an unparalleled rise in orthopaedic research in last decade and has several research projects with national as well as international funding.
(C) Patient services
- Joint Replacement Surgery: This specialisation service focuses on the replacement of damaged joints with artificial implants, such as hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow. Both primary and revision procedures are conducted on routine basis.
- Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine: We provide the treatment of injuries of ligament sprains, strains, and fractures using arthroscopic techniques.
- Spine Surgery: Spine surgery is a specialisation service that focuses on the treatment of spinal disorders, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease using minimally invasive techniques and advanced technologies, such as robotic-assisted surgery, to treat these conditions.
- Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery: This specialisation service focuses on the treatment of conditions affecting the hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow. It also involves the use of a microscope to repair small structures, such as nerves and blood vessels.
- Foot and Ankle Surgery: Foot and ankle surgery is a specialisation service that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the foot and ankle, including fractures, sprains, and arthritis.
- Paediatric orthopaedic surgery: The paediatric orthopaedic services involving congenital, traumatic, infections etc. is provided.
- Musculoskeletal tumour surgery: There is a dedicated team which utilises multidisciplinary approaches. The difficult tumours involving pelvis and spine are also treated.
(D) Operation Theatres: There are 7 modular Operation Theatres dedicated to the Orthopaedics department with latest technology installed to provide quality care to the patients and make them feel calm and comfortable inside the OT complex.
The following advanced facilities are also available in the Department of Orthopaedics:
- Bone Bank Unit: Necessary for providing biological material for a series of orthopaedic procedures where replacement of the bone stock is required like Orthopaedic malignancy, spine surgery.
- High End O-Arm: Assists in visualisation of bone, joint and spine in multiple plains thus allowing to perform complex deformity correction of limb and also safe screw fixation in spine surgery especially among children.
- Robotic Facility: A procedure in which robotic arm allows surgeon to perform spine surgeries in a more precise, faster and minimally invasive manner.
- EOS Imaging Facility: One of the first in India, it helps in understanding the complex association deformities like spinopelvic deformity.
- State-of-the-art Gait Analysis Lab: Gait analysis by digital force plates and camera helped in analysis of various Gait abnormalities.
- Navigation : It enables precise tracking of location of surgical instruments throughout a procedure, Useful in complex arthroplasty, complex spinal deformity surgeries, pelvic tumor surgeries, spinal and pelvic trauma.
