Training and teaching:

Faculty is involved in guiding MD, DM, PhD students working various aspects of tuberculosis.

Division regularly gets short and long term trainees

Division has developed following modules

Grand round in Childhood Tuberculosis

Reading of Chest X ray in children

International Tuberculosis Training Module in Collaboration with Experts from India (Prof Varinder Singh), South Africa (Prof Ben Marias, Prof Anneke Hasseling) and Norway (Prof H Grewal)

Contribution of the department to public health policy:

Categorization of different form of TB in children, with Prof Seth’s efforts, categorization suggested by us have been incorporated in RNTCP

Specialized services provided:

Sputum induction and gastric aspiration for identification of mycobacterium tuberculosis: Sputum and gastric aspirate are done on ambulatory basis on patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in Pediatrics OPD by prior appointments.

Identification of AFB by smear and culture by MGIT media in collaboration with the Department of Laboratory Medicine.  

Interferon gamma release assay using Quantiferon-gold test as part of a research project.

Bronchoscopy and broncho-alveolar lavage and bronchial brush biopsy for children with pulmonary tuberculosis.

Fine needle aspiration cytology and cultures in children with lymphnode tuberculosis (In collaboration with Pathology an dmicrobiology departments).

CT/ USG guided FNAC/ biopsy in children with medaistinal or abdominal tuberculosis in collaboration with departments of Radiodiagnosis, Microbiology and Pathology

Management of MDR/XDR tuberculosis in children

Research

RESEARCH:

Division is actively involved in various aspects of childhood tuberculosis including pharmacokinetics of anti tuberculosis drugs

Categorization of childhood tuberculosis on the line of revised national tuberculosis control program

Systematic review on daily versus intermittent treatment in children

Feasibility of induced sputum and gastric aspirates in ambulatory basis

Role of bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage in childhood tuberculosis

HIV and TB coinfection

Role of multimineral supplementation along with antituberculosis drugs in children with intrathoracic tuberculosis

Comparison of different methods for identification of mycobacterium tuberculosis in childhood tuberculosis

Role of CT scan in assessment of childhood tuberculosis

Pharmacokinetic studies on first line anti tuberculosis drugs

Outpatient

Clinical services:

Weekly out-patient services: Friday 2 PM in Pediatrics OPD (room 9-11)

Weekly Clinic attendance: 60- 70 per clinic (300 new cases per annum)

Patients are provided with free medicines (arranged by NGO- IC Trust)

Break up of cases: Pulmonary tuberculosis 50%, Extra pulmonary TB (lymphnode, abdominal, CNS, renal, pericardial etc) 50%
