Biotechnology has emerged as a major force not only in industrial terms but also as a discipline where in frontier areas of biology are being integrated to enhance the quality of human life.  This is a challenging and exciting time for the field of Biotechnology. With expanding knowledge of the cell and its functioning at the molecular level, biotechnologists are now seeking answers to prevent life threatening diseases, to meet the energy and food requirements of ever-growing population and also to solve the environmental problems that threaten our very existence on this planet. These global developments need to be understood and harnessed by the medical personnel in India at all the levels viz. postgraduate students, teachers and clinicians. With this objectives Department of Biotechnology the first department of Medical Biotechnology in the country was established at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1986 for teaching and research in the areas of Medical Biotechnology. We are moving forward to bring Research to Bed Side.
