Professor of Ophthalmology
Prof. (Dr.) Yog Raj Sharma is presently the Chief of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi since March, 2014, Professor and Consultant - Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon and also Advisor (Ophthalmology) Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MH&FW), New Delhi and Director, World Health Organisation (WHO) SEA Centre for Ophthalmology. He is the Chairman of Diabetic Retinopathy prevention group setup by Government of India.
Education:
- Academic Qualifications: MBBS (Hons.) from University of Calcutta in 1974, M.S. (Merit of First order) from P.G.I.M.E.R., Chandigarh in 1978, ECFMG from USA, Valid indefinitely in 1979.
Experience:
- Vast Experience in the field of Teaching the M.B.B.S., M.D. and Ph.D. Ophthalmologists, at Dr. R.P. Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi.
- Professor of Ophthalmology and Head – Vitreo-Retina Unit: Dr. R. P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences AIIMS, New Delhi, 2012-.
- Professor of Ophthalmology – Vitreo-Retina Unit: Dr. R. P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences AIIMS, New Delhi, 2002-.
- Faculty - Vitreo-Retina Unit at Dr. R. P. Centre, since 1986.
- Appointed as Assistant Director - Indian Council of Medical Research under Supernumerary research cadre scheme, formulated by Govt. of India to bring eminent Indian scientists settled abroad back to India, 1985-86.
- Appointed as Faculty – Ophthalmology, University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, USA, 1982-84 and Faculty – Ophthalmology, Yale University School of Medicine, USA, 1979-82.
- Senior Resident: Retina Unit PGI, Chandigarh, India 1979.
- First Ophthalmologist to be appointed at an Academic position at UAE University in U.A.E. (1992), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. This was based on Worldwide open selection and International referee for this appointment was Prof. W.C. Foulds-CBE.

Awarded the “Academic Achievement Award” by American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), San Francisco, USA 2009.
Awarded the “Front Row Surgical Video Award” by American Academy of Ophthalmology, 2008.
Achievements include restoring vision of a CRPF Jawan attacked in Dantewada Naxalite Massacre. This young man with wife and two small children had both eyes totally mutilated. One eye was salvaged with good vision after four VR Surgeries. He continues to be independent visually till date.

He is a Life Member and Member of the National and International Societies including American Academy of Ophthalmology, All India Ophthalmological Society and profile included in Marquis’ Who is who in Medicine, 2002-13.
