Child Neurology Division

The Child Neurology Division at the Department of Pediatrics, AIIMS, New Delhi caters to a significant proportion of in-patients and out-patients. It also runs the first D.M. programme in Pediatric Neurology in South Asia (started in 2004). The Division is also involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and caters to training of National and International long-term and short-term fellows / trainees from time to time. The Division has continuously produced high quality research in diagnostics and therapeutics aimed at benefitting individual patients as well as the community.

The division is involved in high quality and cross-cutting research in Childhood Neurodevelopmental Disorders translating into around 20 publication every year in indexed International and National journals. It actively disseminates awareness and knowledge to health care professionals, health care providers and public in the field of child neurology. It is involved in advocacy at National and International level. Currently the Division has three faculty members, 2 electrophysiology technicians and one specialty nurse as permanent staff. The Division also gets support from the departmental Nutritionist, Physiotherapist and Social Service Officer. In addition, we have dedicated secretarial and project staff. The Division has 15-18 bedded in-patient unit (as a part of Unit 2, Department of Pediatrics) and caters to around 25000 outpatients annually. Apart from twice a week routine morning out-patients, the Division runs 5 specialty clinics (Developmental clinic, Neurocysticercosis clinic, Pediatric Neurology Clinic, Autism clinic, Neuromuscular disorders clinic) on a weekly basis attending to around 6000 patients in a year.

The Division launched a website on 3rd December, 2014 to augment the level of knowledge and skills of health care professionals throughout the country for early detection and management of childhood neurological and  neurodevelopmental disorders. A separate platform has been developed where parents and care givers can post their queries that is subsequently answered by experts. This will selectively ensure “personalized care” for children with neurological and neuro-developmental disorders  and their caregivers and parents.

A state of the art, Centre of Excellence and Advanced Research for Childhood Neurodevelopmental Disorders, is providing high quality affordable care for all sections of the society, performing high end diagnostic/ therapeutic research and acting as an education/training hub. The centre (Funded by AIIMS Grant in aid {supported by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare} and India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited {IIFCL, as a part of its CSR, MOU signed on 1st December, 2017}) has the following thrust areas:

1. Development of a National Registry for Childhood Neurodevelopmental Disorders

2. National Knowledge & Training Centre for Childhood Neurodevelopmental Disorders

3. Childhood Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Advanced Diagnostics

4. Childhood Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Advanced Therapeutics/Rehabilitation

5. Child Neurology Helpline and Teleconsultation services

  • EEG
    • RoutineEEG:is done in Room no 12 in Paediatric OPD. The appointment is given after the child has been seen in Paediatric Neurology division.
    • AmbulatoryEEG:is done bedside when indicated for in-patients who cannot be shifted to EEG room. Two portable combined EEG and EPS machines are available
    • Video-EEG: is performed in C5 ward Neurophysiology laboratory. Long-term video EEG is performed as indicated
  • Polysomnography (PSG): Polysomnographyis performed in Neurophysiology laboratory in C5 ward.
  • Electrophysiology (EPS) studies

EPS machines are stationed in room no 3057, 3rd floor in Department of Pediatrics and Neurophysiology laboratory in C5 ward where NCS, RNST, Sympathetic skin response and needle EMG are routinely performed on non OPD days. In addition, in collaboration with Eye and ENT departments OAE, BERA and VEP are also done.Ambulatory EPS studies are done as and when needed in inpatients.

  • Neuromodulation and neurorehabilitation

A state of art TMS (trans-cranial magnetic stimulation) machine was installed in room no 3057, 3rd floor in Department of Pediatrics and currently stationed in room number 12 EEG lab (during the pandemic) in children OPD which is being used for children with epilepsy, cerebral palsy, dystonia and autism spectrum disorder  as a therapeutic tool predominantly in various research activities and also in service mode

3. Procedures

  • Biopsies

Skin, muscle and nerve biopsies are done in C5 ward as a day care procedure by Pediatric Neurology residents on Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The appointments for the same are given on OPD basis. The patients then collect the biopsy report from the Pathology department and then follow up in the OPD
