Deka was invited as the Chief Guest for the 7th Convocation of B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences University, Nepal recently. Hon’ble Prime Minister of Nepal Shri Madhav Kumar Nepal was on the chair, who is also the Chancellor of the University. Among the other dignitaries who were present on the occasion were Minister for Health & Population of Government of Nepal and Pro-Chancellor of the university Mr. Uma Kant Chaudhury, the university Vice Chancellor Dr. P.C. Karmacharya apart from Senate Members, Faculty, Staff and Students. Prof Deka in his address highlighted the India- Nepal Agreement which led to the establishment of the University in 1993 marking a new chapter in the friendship and cooperation between the two countries. He commended the faculty, staff and the students for their sincere and dedicated efforts to achieve the university’s goal of developing it into a prestigious centre of excellence for health care and biomedical research in this region. Prof Deka in his speech exhorted the fresh pass outs as doctors and future health-care leaders, to take the challenges of making a healthy society by providing high quality health care through ethical research and value based practice of medicine at an affordable cost to the people. With advances in science and technology, medicine has become a technology based practice. At times diagnostic tests are very costly in modern medicine and one has to be judicious in application of knowledge and experiences in using technology in various clinical situations in medical practice he said. He also underlined the need for preventive and promotive health care through enhancing public health and community health activities. In the end, Prof Deka assured that India is proud of Nepal as a friend and neighbour and reiterated his commitment to extend all possible support and cooperation to develop medical education and health care in Nepal.
