Overview Background of the Summit
The development of Emergency Medicine as
a separate specialty began officially in the mid seventies in the United
States of America. In India emergency care is being practiced in the same
way, as it was in United States
in the pre-inception era. Emergency care in India is often referred to as
casualty care. Quite different from the West, the Indian patients have to
self analyze the urgency of the situation and transport the patient to the
nearest health care center. The winds of change in medical care have
resulted in an urge to create Emergency Medicine as a separate specialty
in India. Summit Description This is the Second INDO-US Emergency Medicine Summit. It is planned to be an annual activity between the AIIMS and USF. This year the meeting will focus on “Connecting Care Competencies and Culture”. It will cover topics related to Emergency Care in trauma, toxicology, cardiovascular and gynecological emergencies in different countries and conditions . Experts in the field will deliver didactic lectures and conduct discussion on various topics. In addition, cases will be presented to point out unusual features in common and uncommon cases. Residents Track and Research Forum A special track dedicated to Residents interested in perusing a career in Emergency medicine and global opportunities has been planned. Special symposia and live interaction seminars with International faculty and residents have been planned. The Research Forum will allow for participating in various areas with a competitive spirit. The competitions are designed to be an academic experience to remember. National Clinico-pathological Case (CPC) Competition, Research Paper Competition (RPC) and Free Poster Competition (FPC), New Ideas Competition (NIC) and Journal Club Competition (JCC) are also planned. Competitors and papers are invited from participating delegates and institutions. Outstanding papers will carry cash award and plaque. The presenter has the option of either oral or poster presentation. The competing delegate RF must register for the Summit. Please read the rules for details. Nurses and Paramedics There are Separate Tracks for Nurses and Paramedics. They have a special competition called the case management competition (CMC) which carries a award of Rupees 10,000 and a plaque of recognition. INDO-US Emergency Medicine Academic Council The Board of Directors of INDUS-EM invites Deans of Indian Medical Colleges Recognized by the Medical Council of India to send one Nominated Faculty to serve as Councilor on the INDUS-EM Academic Council for the Year 2006-2007. The overall goal of the Council is to recognize individual academic faculty from various MCI recognized Medical Colleges in India to form a group who works towards Curriculum development for training Medical Students, Residents and Fellows in Emergency Medicine and Trauma Care in India. These individual will act as a National Leadership Forum which will recommend the curriculum and lead the way to develop Emergency Medicine and Trauma Systems at their respective institutions. INDO-US Career Forums There are special career forums for Medical Students, Residents, Nurses, Paramedics and Faculty to explore possibilities of careers in USA or India. What this Summit has to Offer 1. Address the need for the development of a working knowledge of Emergency Medicine and Trauma Care for health care providers. 2. Develop the concept of ideal Algorithms for emergency patient care based on the Unique Global Model of Collaboration between AIIMS and USF. 3. Exchange of knowledge between experts in USA and India to develop suitable emergency care practices in India. This will help experts share their successes and challenges. 4. Advocate the creation of an Academic Emergency Medicine and Trauma residency program based on a curriculum suitable for India. 5. Develop contacts with professionals who have the potential to collaborate on current or future projects, or support and assist with problem solving. 6. To act as a resource for continuing medical education. 7. To foster leadership and discover leaders to develop Emergency Medicine in India.
