Prof. Indira Nath : Founder of The Department
Thirty years ago in 1986, the discipline of Biotechnology was introduced at AIIMS. Prof. Indira Nath, then Professor of Pathology, established Biotechnology at AIIMS as a Masters’ Programme (popularly known as M. Biotech), with funding from the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. Thereafter, in mid-1987, the founding Faculty members, namely Prof. Indira Nath (Head) along with Prof. Y.D. Sharma and Prof. Jaya S. Tyagi, were appointed.
The Department offers master course (M. Biotechnology) on semester system pattern and Ph.D. program in Biotechnology as per recent UGC norms. At present, its student intake capacity is 15 students each for M.Sc. courses. So far more than 31 batches of M.Sc. have obtained their degrees. Our master Programme is been accredit A ranking by Department of Biotechnology, India.
Presently, the Department is headed under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Jaya S Tyagi who has long research and academic experience of more than 38 years. Dr. Taygi is well known name in the field of Mycobacterium molecular biology and Diagnosis. Department is actively engaged in research areas of TB, Malaria, Cancer and Cardiogenomics. The faculty members have published more than 500 research articles/chapters in journals/books of national and international repute. All faculty members are active in doing advance research funded by various Govt. of India agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DBT, ICMR, DST, as well as International funding agencies like CNRS, Bill and gates foundation etc. with around several Ph.D. students/Project fellows working on several important research topics. The department regularly invites eminent scientists and academicians to deliver seminars on current topics of national importance to apprise the students and faculty members of Institute on recent advances related to the field of biotechnology.
