Stem Cell Facility, AIIMS came into existence in 2005. The facility is
created to initiate Clinical and Basic Research in the emerging field of
Stem Cells. The Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India is also
supporting this facility to emerge as a Centre of Excellence for Stem
Cell Research : Basic and Translational (DBT COE - CSCR: BT).The
Facility caters to the need of the Cell Based Therapies for various
degenerative disorders which include Heart Muscle Cells Regeneration,
Ocular Surface Reconstruction, Retinal degenerated disease, Peripheral
Vascular Disease, Stroke, Myocardial Infarct, Dialated Cardiomyopathy,
Non-union Fracture, Extra Hepatic Biliary Atresia and Spina bifida. It
is also involved in Cord Blood Banking, which is a Central in-house
Facility.
Apart from this, it is also involved in Basic Stem Cell Research in
areas such as Mesenchymal Stem Cells, induced Pluripotent Stem Cells,
Corneal Epithelial Stem Cells, Epidermal Stem Cells, Cancer Stem Cells
and Stem Cells Tissue Engineering. Various aspects of stem cell biology
is being investigated here to better understand their clinical impact,
such as their differentiation potential, marker expression profile and
signaling pathway
