Dr. Rajvardhan Azad

Professor & Chief

 Dr. Rajvardhan Azad is currently holding the post of Professor of Ophthalmology and Head, Vitreo-Retina & Ocular Trauma Unit. He also worked as Consultant & Vitreoretinal Surgeon, Ministry of Health, Kuwait from November 1994 to March 1998.

Dr. Rajvardhan Azad is a recipient of Dr. B.C. Roy National A ward for Eminent Medical Teacher for the year 1987. He was awarded for outstanding contribution to Ophthalmology by Delhi Ophthalmological Society in 1990 and again in April, 2000. He was also awarded Fellowship of Ophthalmic Research and Community Centres of India (FORCE) at Bangalore in 1991. Dr. Azad was awarded by first SAARC Conference of Ophthalmologist for outstanding contribution to Ophthalmology in Saarc region in Kathmandu in 1991. He is a recipient of Dr. C.N. Shroff award for best retinal work in India at the Golden Jubilee Conference of All India Ophthalmological Society in 1992. He was also awarded certificate of Merit and Appreciation at six (6) Medical University Inter Faculty meet in Kobe, Japan in 1992. He was awarded Dr.P.N.Sinha oration and Gold Medal in 2001.


Dr. Azad is conferred Fellow International College of Surgeons, Fellow Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and Fellow, National Academy of Medical Sciences. He is President of National Board of Examination.


Dr. Azad is a life member of about a dozen Scientific Committees/Societies such as All India Ophthalmological Society, Indo-Japanese Ophthalmological Foundation, Ophthalmic Laser Society, Delhi Ophthalmological Society, Faculty Association of AU.M.S. and National Society for Prevention of Blindness - India. He is also an international member of American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was Secretary and later President of Delhi Ophthalmological Society (1999- 2000). He was Secretary General of National Society for Prevention of Blindness-India. He is President of Vitreo-retinal Society of India and Secretary General of Ophthalmic Laser Society of India. He is Secretary, All India Ophthalmological Society. He has also worked as Technical Advisor to W.H.O. for South East Asia regional meeting on blindness in Jakarta in February, 2000.

Dr. Azad has authored books on Application of Laser in Ophthalmology, A practical manual of Indirect Ophthalmology, Current concepts in Ophthalmic Lasers, Vocational work book for Ophthalmic Technician, A Practical Manual of Indirect Ophthalmoscopy - 2nd ed., A Practical Approach to Retinopathy of Prematurity Screening and Management and Vocational Text book for Ophthalmic Technician and has written many chapters in Books. He has over 120 national and international publications.


He has been invited to many of Ophthalmological Societies of various countries to deliver lecture and present scientific papers. His presentation include American Academy of Ophthalmology, European Congress of Ophthalmology, International Congress of Ophthalmology, Asia Pacific Congress of Ophthalmology, Saarc Ophthalmological Congress, Japan Ophthalmological Society and Pan Arab Ophthalmology.

He is a named Hony. Surgeon to President of India since 1989.
